Collier Schorr, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, "More American Photographs", Oct 4 - Dec 17, 2011
More American Photographs, on view at the Wattis Institute through December 17, 2011, features works of 12 contemporary photographers alongside a selection of original images taken by Farm Security Administration photographers during the Great Depression between 1935 and 1944. Ken Allen Studios worked with Collier Schorr to produce the three prints she selected for the group exhibition. Each piece is a digital collage combining images from Schorr's series on competitive rodeo riders and vintage photographs of the inner city. The final prints were made on Hahnemuhle Fine Art paper and measure 38"x45." Ken Allen Studios also collaborated with Schorr in 2008 for her exhibition at 303 Gallery, "There I Was."
In Young Rider, Collier Schorr continues her exploration of the point at which masculinity collides with adolescence's tenderness and fragility. This work expresses the image of a youthful cowboy in waiting, capturing a sense of innocence surrounded by grim reality. Her images present two visions of America that exist simultaneously: the privileged desire for fame and fortune met with its underbelly, the imminent drive for survival.
